Deck/Porch Build/Replace

The primary purpose of porches and decks is to provide a focal area for outdoors activities. A sufficiently deep porch makes for a handy spot to entertain guests near the front or back doors of the home, while a sprawling deck allows for more elaborate social functions at the expense of space and integration with the house.

For many years, the tendency in American architecture has been to reduce the size of the porch, to the point where, in many modern homes, it is little more than a non-functional aesthetic feature. This trend has now begun to change, with more and more architects affirming the importance of a wide porch for encouraging good relations in the community and to serve as a central location for interacting with neighbors and family.

A porch can be a particularly attractive home feature because it is easy to incorporate its design into that of the house itself. A porch which is affixed to the house and which is constructed in a similar style will appear to be an organic extension of the residence, an effect which is very pleasing to the eye.

By contrast, decks are more expensive than porches, require more maintenance, and are more difficult to connect smoothly to the design of the home. However, a large deck allows a homeowner to maximize the use of their yard space for purposes of entertaining, and can be especially desirable if a portion of the property consists of otherwise unusable ground space.
